MSc/MEng Artificial Intelligence – University of Bologna

TheTwo-Year International Master in Artificial Intelligence is a programme offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Bologna (DISI). As of 2019,is delivered entirely in English and it provides solid competence and expertise in the founding areas and innovative applications of artificial intelligence.

The programme adopts a broad-spectrum, interdisciplinary approach, addressing a variety of topics in artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, automated reasoning, artificial vision, natural language processing, data science, optimization, and decision support systems, while also offering perspectives in cognitive neurosciences and in ethical and social issues. Students will acquire soft skills which allow them to interact professionally with industrial stakeholders and researchers.

The programme lasts 2 years (120-126 ECTS)

Mandatory courses (totaling 72 ECTS):

  • Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation
  • Machine Learning and Deep Learning
  • Languages and Algorithms for Artificial Intelligence
  • Statistical and Mathematical Methods for Artificial Intelligence
  • Combinatorial Decision Making and Optimization
  • Image Processing and Computer Vision
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Cognition and Neuroscience
  • Ethics in Artificial Intelligence

Elective courses (6-8 ECTS each):

  • Architecture and Platforms for Artificial Intelligence
  • Artificial Intelligence in Industry
  • Data Mining, Text Mining and Big Data Analytics
  • Knowledge Engineering

  • Social Network Analysis
  • Autonomous and Adaptive Systems
  • Multimedia Data Management
  • Scalable and Reliable Services

Each student must fill in a study plan for 120-126 ECTS to be completed in two years. It consists of:

  • All mandatory courses (72 ECTS)
  • Three to four elective courses (18/24 ECTS)
  • Two elective Project Works or Labs (6 ECTS)
  • A final examination (24 ECTS)

The preparation for the final examination consists in a final project and dissertation, describing work carried out by the candidate, typically at public or private universities, research institutions, or companies, in Italy or abroad, or within the research groups of the University of Bologna. The typical duration of this activity is 4-6 months full time.

There are no summer activities.

Following evaluation, industrial/research experience/internship could be counted as part of the credits for the elective courses, for up to 12 ECTS

The minimum qualifications required to apply are:

  • A three-year bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Automation, Electronics, Telecommunications, or Biomedical Engineering, gained through the acquisition of at least 180 ECTS credits, or foreign equivalent. If the qualification is not available at the time of the application, it must be presented before the end of the solar year (December);
  • Adequacy of academic preparation, evaluated in terms of an academic performance indicator and a computer science credits indicator,
  • Fulfillment of English language requirements,
